Introduction
Industrial spaces are considered vital hubs for replicating sustainable practices and accelerating decarbonization efforts. The National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) implements four flagship projects in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to drive sustainable industrial development across South Africa.
Through technical expertise, multi-sector partnerships and coordinated project delivery, the NCPC acts as a national enabler of change. These projects aim to reduce environmental impact, accelerate the transition to clean energy, and strengthen the country’s vision of a low-carbon economy.
Now in its fifth year, the GEIPP promotes streamlined management and industrial symbiosis within parks. The programme encourages collaboration among companies to optimise resource use, improve waste and energy integration, and implement cleaner production practices. By demonstrating how sustainability can drive competitiveness, the GEIPP supports industrial parks in becoming global models of eco-efficient growth.
Launched in 2023, the SESID project introduces sustainable energy systems in industrial spaces to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Implemented across six industrial parks from 2023 to 2027, the project is funded by the Global Environment Facility and focuses on demonstrating replicable, low-carbon energy solutions that advance industrial decarbonisation.
This new initiative aims to further reduce energy consumption and expand the use of renewable energy technologies within industrial parks. The project is designed to accelerate the transition towards low-carbon operations while showcasing the potential of positive-energy zones that produce more clean energy than they consume.
Set to launch soon, this programme focuses on fostering policy, institutional and financial readiness for the adoption of clean hydrogen technologies. By building the groundwork for a hydrogen-based industrial future, the initiative supports South Africa’s broader clean energy goals and industrial transformation agenda.
